Can my child travel alone on a Greyhound?

Modified on Tue, 29 Sep at 6:11 AM

No. Children aged 14 years and under cannot travel alone on Greyhound coaches.

A child aged 14 years or younger must be accompanied by a parent, guardian, carer or chaperone (aged 15 years or older) for the entire journey, including any connecting services, transfers or layovers.

The accompanying person is responsible for the child's supervision, safety and wellbeing throughout the trip. While our Coach Captains are always happy to assist with boarding and travel information, they cannot supervise children, provide ongoing care, or act as a parent, guardian or chaperone during the journey.

Young people aged 15 years or older may travel independently, provided they meet Greyhound's Independent Travel Conditions. This means they must be able to travel without assistance beyond what is normally provided to all passengers and follow any directions given by a Coach Captain during their journey.

When considering independent travel, it's important to remember that coach travel is a live transport service. Delays, road closures, weather events and other operational disruptions can occasionally occur, so the traveller should be comfortable managing unexpected changes to their journey.

Good to know

  • Children aged 14 years and under cannot travel alone.
  • Children aged 15 years and over may travel independently if they meet the Independent Travel Conditions.
  • Children aged 15 years and over, must present photo ID when boarding.
  • Coach Captains cannot supervise children or provide chaperone services.
  • Parents and guardians should consider the traveller's ability to manage unexpected travel disruptions before booking independent travel.

Important: Children aged 14 years and under cannot travel alone, even with parental permission. Coach Captains may refuse travel if they believe a traveller is under 15 years of age or cannot provide valid photo ID when requested.

Tip: Before travelling, make sure the traveller has their itinerary, emergency contact details, a charged mobile phone and knows who to contact if they need assistance during their journey.
